Defining Key Terms In An Essay: Basic Tutorial
Even if you are not a big fan of literature, you still want to create amazing essays. This will make you look very dedicated in front of your professor and it will make your colleagues interested in what you have to say. Of course, in order to create such a good composition you have to work for a few days and to take care of every small detail. Key terms might seem unimportant, but it’s vital to know how to define and use them in a composition. Check out this tutorial:
- Take a look at the title. Sometimes, the title of the composition has not apparent connection with the content itself. However, you will find titles that are not only relevant to the composition, but they are actually a symbol for the ideas that are explored there. If a word from the title is repeated a few times in the text, you can consider it a key term.
- A character. Yes, a character can mean a lot of things when it is mentioned in a text. Did you ever read a story and you notice how everything changes after a specific character appears? Well, it is obvious how this persona changed the entire action and the entire moral. You can emphasize this by describing this specific character in a separate paragraph and how it is important for the action.
- Search for symbols. As you know, a building or a book can be more than a simple object. It can represent the struggle of an entire country, it can represent hate or love, appreciation or disgust. Very often we encounter elements like this in literature, but we don’t really pay attention to this. If you identified such an element, you have to explain it in your own words.
- Repetitive words. If you find a word that is repeated in every paragraph, for sure it is important for the composition itself. In this case you have to give a definition and to explain what this word means and if it is used in a figure of speech or not. In general, you will be required to explain this in a footnote, not in the middle of the text. In this way the composition will still look organized and clean, but at the same time it will provide all the information that the reader needs.
