There are a number of factors you need to be certain about when writing an informative essay. The two most important factors are the general definition of an informative essay and the structure which is to be used in your writing. Knowing the definition or purpose of an informative essay is a no-brainer. It doesn't matter how well you research your essay or how well you write it, if you don't understand the purpose or definition of an informative essay you've missed the boat.
It's probably just as easy to tell you what an informative essay is not. It's not an essay where you give your opinion. You are not there to tell the world what you think. Understand the definition
You'll find that some schools or colleges refer to an informative essay as an expository essay. You are there to provide information, to outline and explain a certain topic. You are there to educate the reader. It's a good approach to make an assumption that the reader knows nothing about the topic of your informative essay. That of course may not be the case because your teacher or tutor or whoever does read your essay could well have a strong background in the topic. But that's not how you approach the task.
Understand the structure
Being sure of the definition of an informative essay is only half the battle. The second part is to know the structure. Basically it's divided into three parts. There is the introduction, the middle bit or the main part of the essay and then the final bits, the conclusion.
In the introduction you introduce the topic you are to explain. In the middle section you detail the facts or information. A good way to achieve this is to answer the how, what, where, when and why questions concerning the topic. Weave the answers into your essay.
Keep the final part, the conclusion, short and to the point. Don't add any new information and make sure your essay will have informed the reader in a clear and detailed fashion.
